What is Respiratory Infection?

It is an infection of the respiratory tract, namely the nose, sinuses and throat (upper respiratory infection) and the air passage leading to the lungs (lower respiratory tract infection).

Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is a common disease in all age groups and causes deaths in more than 4 million people every year, most of whom are children

Various infective agents can cause respiratory infection, and the most frequent are certain viruses and bacteria.

How do people get infected?

  • By inhaling the infecting agent when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  • By touching contaminated material and then touching one’s mouth, nose or eyes
