What is HIV?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks human immune system, the body’s natural defense system. After getting into the body, the virus kills or damages cells of the body’s immune system.

There are three stages of HIV infection:

1. The initial stage – occurs within weeks of acquiring the virus, characterized by a flu-like illness that resolves within weeks.
2. The stage of chronic asymptomatic infection (meaning a long duration of infection without symptoms) lasts an average of 8 to 10 years.
3. The stage of symptomatic infection, in which the body’s immune (or defense) system has been suppressed and complications have developed, is called the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The symptoms are caused by the complications of AIDS, which include one or more unusual infections or cancers, severe loss of weight and intellectual deterioration (called dementia).

Malaysian HIV/AIDS cases have been reporting since 1986 by the Ministry of Health. Since then, 101 672 confirmed HIV infected cases and 16 360 deaths have been reported as at the last day of 2013. Between January to June 2014, 1 676 cases of HIV and 598 cases of AIDS with 402 deaths were recorded. Out of this new infection, 79.7% are men.
