Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)

What is EBV?

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a member of the Herpesviridae family.
EBV is the one of the most common human viruses and is found all over the world.
Many people get infected with EBV at some point in their lives.

Causes

Infection mononucleosis
Burkitt lymphoma
Nasopharyngeal carcinomas
Several lymphoproliferative syndromes

Mode of Transmission

EBV is secreted in saliva and pharyngeal secretions.
It can also spread through blood and semen during sexual contact and organ transplantations through blood transfusions.

Diagnosis

EBV Infection can be confirmed with a blood test that detects antibodies.
PCR EBV is available in Geneflux Laboratories to detect EBV.
